I had this ongoing joke with a friend to open up a store that sold only bookmarks called Bookmarks. What a million dollar idea, right? Trademark pending.
Why a bookmark?
A bookmark is there with you through every story you’ve cried and laughed in,through the hard covers and paper backs, the old and the new book smell, the many ripped and bent pages you’ve turned, and the new chapters you’ve started. It reminds you of where you are,how far you’ve come along, and sticks with you right to the very end.
One night over a glass of wine I wrote this and shared it with them. Since then, we referred to our friendship as a bookmark. It can also be a parent, a sibling, a relative, a neighbour, a pet. A bookmark can be any relationship you truly cherish.
My bookmark is my God and my spirit, whom I take with me as I read each sentence that turn into paragraphs and eventually a new page. He’s my bookmark through it all. He sticks with me through parts that are unbearable to read. He helps guide my eyes when I can’t read straight. He leads me to where the story ends in victory. He does not do things for me but does things with me, through me. I have been given a book that’s rough around the edges and stories that aren’t any better. But, I wouldn’t have it written any other way. Because I’m grateful for the lessons I’ve learned to become the person I am today.
Today I was reminded by that particular moment when I saw a Post-it sticking out of my current read, Thinking Fast and Slow. There are many different bookmarks out there: clever, cute, laminated, some with tassels. But I chose a Post-it: a little rectangular yellow piece of paper with a sticky backing. It is what it is. It is all I need to get me to the end of my story.
My bookmark reminds me I’m not finished yet. There are still more pages to get through …Keep reading.
Now tell me,
Who is your bookmark?
